That social networks, led by Facebook, were largely responsible for the abuse perpetrated against minors in recent years is nothing new. Pedophilia, cyberbullying, child prostitution, and so on, are just some of the crimes committed by unscrupulous people, thanks to the use of the famous social network and other instant messaging systems, such as WhatsApp. On the other hand, this should not surprise us at all given that, as a recent survey also claims, as many as 67 minors out of 100 own a mobile phone with which they can easily connect to the internet.
The latest confirmation of this dangerous escalation comes from an episode that occurred a few days ago in the province of Reggio Emilia: a young 21-year-old Indian created a fake profile on Facebook to blackmail a 14-year-old girl from whom he then asked for risqué photos . After being satisfied, the man made the barbaric request to the girl to have sex with him. In case of refusal he would have published the offending photos online. However, the little girl decided to tell everything to her mother, thus managing to identify and have the blackmailer arrested.
The episode in question makes us understand the importance of parental support in the prevention of Internet crimes. It is possible to free yourself from the grip of the pedophiles who populate the internet (but also those who "hook" kids with more traditional methods). How? Thanks to the support of the parent who, if necessary, can implement a form of active control of the contacts, phone calls and messages that pass through the minor's mobile phone.
